Dear Friends,
After a long, happy and successful life I am sad to let you know that Maj Gen RN (Bob) Evans has died aged 99years.
I am in touch with his son Stephen who let me know. Gen Bob spent his last few years in a care home where for the most part he flourished having been very lonely in the house at Folly Hill after his wife died.
He used to phone me every few weeks to , as he would say ‘chew the fat’. I enjoyed our chats and latterly he would advise me that he had instructed his family as to his exact his plans for his funeral, he was determined that it would be what he wanted and also to save his family the bother.
Funeral details as follows:
Day TBC

Further to my last, Jake and Dave will be visiting the Royal Court Hotel on Tuesday 22nd June to discuss a possible date/s for the long-awaited P&P weekend.

In order to facilitate this, they require numbers of attendees for the meeting. This message will also be circulated via Facebook and email.

Should there be a limit imposed on attendance(say 30) then it will be first come first served. A ball park figure is what we need at this time... so if you say yes then have to cancel down the line so be it.

Can you please respond by no later than Sunday 20thJune.

The next P&P will be our opportunity to toast, say farewell and remember the ‘boys’ we have lost since our last get-together.

Normal attendance criteria will apply.

As a young surgeon, David Jackson decided to walk away from his developing NHS hospital career to pursue challenge, travel and adventure with the British Army. Over the 17 years that followed, he got plenty of all three. He served on the surgical front line in Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands and Bosnia and found himself dealing on a daily basis with the horrors and tragedies of war, looking after soldiers with appalling, sometimes fatal, injuries and using all the skills at his disposal to save lives and limbs. His unplanned return to the NHS and the reason for it is recounted, along with descriptions of the peacetime cases and situations he had to deal with. The fact that he never lost his sense of humour comes over very clearly in this colourful, moving and entertaining book. I have now received the artwork for the plaque.
I have forwarded on to Barry (Hall) for his OK - I never served there so I need a second opinion.

I will be contacting all who have requested a plaque sometime today for confirmation of postal addresses. Although I have all on the database I still need confirmation just in case there has been a move afoot! If you have sent me your address in the last few days then you need not do so again.

I will contact all with payment details once the order has been placed, accepted and paid for by me from the OTT bank account.
THE INTERIM OTT NIGHT OUT

I spoke to Jake earlier today. The 'do' and hotel (Covid) recce went well.

The hotel was on the ball re precautions. with sanitised rooms and things like TV remotes in plastic coverings.

Social distancing was up to the customers there and being adults it wasn't an issue so subject to another spike then we are good to go in November.

I have checked the date for Remembrance Sunday (RS) 2020 and it is being held on Sunday 8th November which as you will know is over the P&P weekend.

We have in the past held a P&P over the RS and either attended the NMA or a local memorial event prior to departing for home (those that do so). Wait out on that.

Onwards and upwards - take care and stay safe.
I hope that this finds you and yours well?

As you will know the P&P was cancelled until November - that is still the case. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will be able to confirm the status of our booking/s with the hotel (The Royal Court Hotel, Coventry) now that 'things' are easing up...a bit (!)

Looking forward to next year - our reunion year. I stated at the last reunion group meeting that I would be standing down from organising the event (15 years with time off for good behaviour).
If the event is to go ahead next year (Spring) then we need someone (or an individual as part of a team) to step up to the plate as the lead organiser and start thinking about it now (date/venue format [old or new]) as I can assure you time passes ++ when your having fun.
I/we look forward to hearing from a committed member/s to take over and make the reunion an even more enjoyable and successful event. Thank you.

OTT REUNITED P&P WEEKEND POSTPONED UNTIL NOVEMBER

Dear All,

In light of the current policy of isolation I spoke to Dave and Jake this morning re cancellation or postponement of the P&P weekend. We are in agreement that the best and safest way forward is to postpone rather than cancel.

Following the conversation with Dave/Jake I spoke to Nav at the hotel and informed her that we wish to postponing until the weekend of 6th - 8th November 2020 (Remembrance Weekend) - dates confirmed.

What that means in reality is that all confirmed bookings will be transferred to the new dates and payments made retained by the hotel. There is no requirement for any individual to do anything other than diary that date.

Should you not be able to make that weekend then the normal cancellation policy remains (48hrs prior to event) so no rush.

If you do wish to cancel, then payment made by card will be refunded to the card - payment made by cheque may take up to six weeks to process. Individuals must inform the hotel by email of their intentions. Email address: conf710@britanniahotels.com (so both parties have written confirmation).

I am now waiting to see whether I need to sign a new contract for that weekend or current one is stil extant.

The weekend trip will now be to the NMA. With lunch at a local pub.

I have requested a current booking list and will email individuals accordingly.

Stay safe.
Regards

Stay safe.
Regards

Next P&P: Provisional dates see below - Provisional venue see below

Dear All,

Just a quick message as still under the weather with this virus thingy doing the rounds. Not quite back on the horse and in the saddle - maybe more side saddle at the moment but getting there.

This message is purely about the next P&P.

As you will know we hold two per year - the next to be arranged for April.

We did discuss future locations/venues at the last P&P and circulated requests via email. To date nothing has been received or proposed. To that end I have contacted a few members and conducted a straw poll re dates/venue/location.

Situation….it was agreed by those contacted that should a location/venue not be forthcoming within the next week (as these things take time to organize) then the fall-back position will be The Royal Court Hotel, Coventry.

The dates suggested will be either 17th - 19th April or 24th - 26th April 2020. These dates will avoid Easter and hopefully most school holidays.

Dave Marshall and Jake Marlee have agreed to visit the Royal Court should the need arise and see what deal can be done but it must be done soon. The location went down well with those who attended the last ‘do’ hence the suggestion of revisiting the Royal Court. All being well the same conference and function management team will still be in place.

We are looking for (as always) a good affordable price (£50 pppn), D, B&B, approximately 25 rooms (possibly more), a private dining room/bar if possible or for at least Saturday evening, Happy Hour prices and a Saturday trip location. I have an aide-memoir of our requirements should anyone require it.

Negotiation is everything. Bob Gramson did a great job last time sadly he didn’t make it to the event to see the fruits of his labour.

In summary… ‘We’ need a proposition by the beginning of next week with a firm commitment or we go ahead with the Royal Court. Time is of the essence.

Take care.
I hope as many as possible can attend to remember the extraordinary character that was one Bob Gramson...we will raise a glass and tell tales of his daring do, relate stories good, bad and indifferent and generally rip him to pieces as only our members can ?????.

Details and booking form circulated to members last night by email. If you haven't received the email please let me know soonest.

Ron Denton is attending but sadly there isn't a snooker table at the hotel so he can't regale us with his prowess at the table...he is now able to pot four balls in an afternoon session ...carpet bowls is the way forward ??‍♂️?.
As Bob was organising the P&P - the Saturday trip was being sorted by him. If anyone has any ideas for the Saturday trip please let me know and I will circulate suggestions.

The Late Maj Gen ® Norman Kirby OBE, QHS, FRCS, FRCS(Ed) L/RAMC
1927 - 2019

Gen Norman sadly passed away in the Royal Stoke University Hospital on Thursday evening.

General Kirby was 92 years of age. Amongst his many accolades was the fact that he was involved in the last operational parachute jump of a UK field surgical team. That jump took place during the Suez crisis of 1956!

Like many I was privileged to have work with him in a number of postings over the years.

One short story…..Gen Norman had come up from the Zone to do a list/OPD etc at BMH Berlin. After the list myself and fellow members of the BMH Marching Team jumped into our vehicles and headed off to Belgium…in the early hours of the morning we pulled into a petrol station south of Hannover to fill up - standing with nozzle in hand, who should be on the other side of the pump but Gen Norman…”Sir”…”Hi Sgt”…he had flown down to Hannover and picked up his staff car at the BMH and was on his way back to Rheindahlen……”Where is your driver”….”In the back”…the driver was kipping in the back – Norman was doing the driving…”Why”….”The poor lad is a bit tired said he”….with that he paid the bill gave us a wave and was on his way.

That was the sort of man he was - thankfully he didn’t have an accident or he would have been bust to Pte.

Not only was he a great surgeon but a wonderful man and friend to many OTTs during his long career in the Corps. As such, he was most grateful to receive an invitation ‘from the boys’ to be a reunion GoH…we last saw him when he ‘popped in’ to see us on the Saturday of our Stoke-on-Trent Reunion.

Prof Robert Kirby (Gen Norman’s son) will inform interested parties when funeral arrangements are finalised.

Been quiet on all fronts recently...must be the weather!

Over the weekend of Friday 31st May - 2nd June 2019 a group of our fellow members visited the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry to recce the proposed venue for the next PPG. This venue came top of the poll of possible locations.

In attendance were Dave Marshall, Jake Marlee, Ron Safhill, Bash Ahmed and Bob Gramson. Ian Scarr had to cancel at the last minute due to work commitments.

Bash and Bob Gramson lead the negotiations with the function/events staff (Naveneet [Nav] and Nichol ([Nikky]). Brilliant job well done gents.

All attending commented - and I quote "We received fantastic service from all the staff, the food, accommodation and bar facilities were spot on . We have talked at length, and the phrase that was used several times was ..." ticks every box".....
